Good Friday Service

Welcome

Call to Worship

Leader: Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows;
People: Yet, we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted.
Leader: But, He was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities.
People: The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we were healed.
Leader: We all, like sheep, have gone astray.
People: Each of us has turned to his own way,
All: And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Song - "Go to Dark Gethsemane"

Verse 1
Go to dark Gethsemane
All who follow the tempter's power
Your Redeemer's conflict see
Watch with Him one bitter hour
Turn not from His griefs away
Learn from Jesus Christ to pray
Verse 2
Follow to the judgement hall
View the Lord of life arraigned
Oh, the wormwood and the gall
Oh, the pangs His soul sustained
Shun not suffering, shame or loss
Learn from Him to bear the cross
Verse 3
Calvary's mournful mountain climb
There, adoring at His feet
Mark the miracle of time
God's own sacrifice complete
"It is finished" hear Him cry
Learn from Jesus Christ to die
Verse 4
Early hasten to the tomb
Where they laid His breathless clay
All is solitude and gloom
Who has taken Him away?
Christ is risen! He meets our eyes
Savior, teach us so to rise

First Reading - Matthew 27:15-31

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Merciful God, we meet each other today at the foot of the cross, as inhabitants of one world. We wait with each other as those who inflict wounds on one another.
People: Be merciful to us.
Leader: As those who deny justice to others,
People: Be merciful to us.
Leader: As those who put their trust in power,
People: Be merciful to us.
Leader: As those who are greedy,
People: Be merciful to us.
Leader: As those who put others on trial,
People: Be merciful to us.
Leader: As those who refuse to receive,
People: Be merciful to us.
Leader: As those who are afraid of the world's torment,
People: Be merciful to us.

Song - "Rock of Ages"

Verse 1
Rock of Ages, when the day seems long
From this labor and this heartache, I have come
The skies will wear out, but you remain the same
Rock of Ages, I praise your name
Verse 2
Rock of Ages, you have brought me near
You have poured out your life-blood, your love, your tears
To make this stone heart come alive again
Rock of Ages, forgive my sin
Chorus
Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages
Bind your children until the kingdom comes
Rock of Ages your will be done
Verse 3
Rock of Ages, when in want or rest
My desperate need for such a Savior I confess
Pull these idols out from my heart embrace
Rock of Ages, I need your grace
Verse 4
Rock of Ages, broken scorned for me
Who am I that you would die to make me free
To give me glory, you took the death and pain
Rock of Ages, my Offering
Chorus
Verse 5
Rock of Ages, "It is done!" you cried
The curtain's torn and I see justice satisfied
Now write your mercy, on my heart and hands
Rock of Ages, in faith I stand
Verse 6
Rock of Ages, my great hope secure
Your promise holds just like an anchor to my soul
Bind your children with cords of love and grace

Second Reading - Matthew 27:32-44

Song - "Beautiful Scandalous Night"

Verse
Go on up to the mountain of mercy
To the crimson perpetual tide
Kneel down on the shore, be thirsty no more
Go under and be purified
Follow Christ to the Holy mountain
Sinner, sorry and wrecked by the fall
Cleanse your heart and your soul, in the fountain that flows
For you and for me and for all
Chorus
At the wonderful tragic mysterious tree
On that beautiful scandalous night you and me
Were atoned by His blood and forever washed white
On that beautiful scandalous night
Verse
On the hillside you will be delivered
At the foot of the cross justified
And your spirit restored, by the river that pours
From our blessed Savior's side
Chorus

Third Reading - Matthew 27:45-54

Meditation

Song - "Jesus Paid It All"

Verse 1
I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness watch and pray
Find in me thine all in all
Chorus
Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow
Verse 2
Lord now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone
Can change the leper's spots
And melt the heart of stone
Chorus
Verse 3
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat
Chorus
Bridge
O praise the One who paid my debt
And raised this life up from the dead
O praise the One who paid my debt
And raise this life up from the dead
Outro
O praise the One who paid my debt
And raised the life up from the dead
O praise the One who paid my debt
And raised the life up from the dead
