On any given Sunday, you might see us chasing after our three daughters, telling them to get down from the tree in front of Kairos, or pleading with them to stop tormenting each other. Ten years ago, though, our lives looked very different. Back then, we were heartbroken after losing our first baby to miscarriage.
After four years of marriage, we had decided that we were ready to start a family. When I got pregnant, we immediately started planning for life with a child, discussing childcare options, organizing the room that would be the nursery, and more. Although we could barely contain the excitement, we waited a few weeks before we started telling friends and family. When we shared the news with the grandparents-to-be, they were overjoyed. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage a few days later.
During the weeks that followed, I wondered if I had done something to cause my pregnancy loss. I wondered if we would ever be able to have a baby. I cried when we were not included in a “family event” at our church. I missed a baby shower for a friend because it would be too hard to be there. As we grieved and healed, we realized that we were not alone. Our community loved us, supported us, and shared stories of loss.
Several years later, I was invited to the Made Known service at Kairos. Even years after pregnancy loss, the Made Known service helped me to reflect and continue to heal. Made Known is a time for any man or woman who has experienced infant loss to remember that their precious babies were MADE by God and KNOWN by their parents.
