In this Easter season, we are called to join with Christ and live joyfully, without fear. The art currently installed in our sanctuary exemplifies this call to new life. The colorful birds flying above our heads as we worship are uplifting and joyful. As the traditional Easter hymn says “Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia!”
This installation is the work of Willis Norman, a local Atlanta artist, and was made possible by the generosity of the Kairos community. Willis was compensated through special use of our Equipping Fund, known as the Kairos Arts Equipping Fund. The vision for this fund is to equip and encourage vocational artists in the broader Atlanta area, while enhancing our worship experience in the Kairos worship space.
It is my hope that future art projects will continue to involve the hands-on participation of the Kairos community. Dozens of us helped to fold the origami birds after a worship service one Sunday, and several Kairos members stayed after the Good Friday service to help Willis install the finished work.
In addition to the soaring birds installation, we have a new set of banners. About thirty of us, over the course of two evenings, collaborated to paint these. The fellowship and sense of community created by contributing to these projects is one of the aspects that I love best about Kairos.
