Fast from Rescue and Feast on Deliverance

Kairos Community,

Below we have provided you with a worship service outline.  We encourage you to set aside 30-40 minutes on Sunday morning for a time of worship, prayer and reflection on God’s Word.  This week, Drew will be preaching from Psalm 130.  The scripture reading is provided by several of our middle school students. We will learn how to Fast from Rescue and Feast on Deliverance.  Below you will find a link to watch and listen to Drew’s sermon

For followers of Jesus, Sunday worship is an anchor point in our week that we use to frame and orient our lives.  The current health crisis only increases our need to frame our lives upon the way of Jesus, and we pray that this worship service outline helps you continue to place your faith and hope in Jesus Christ.  We will not gather in body, but we will continue to gather in spirit to worship and proclaim God’s provision and faithfulness.

Opening Quote

Opening Prayer from St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
Where there is fear, let me sow love;
Where there is isolation, friendship;
Where there is panic, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may
Not so much seek to be healthy as to heal,
To be comfortable, as to bring comfort,
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in Christ’s giving that we receive,
And it’s in His hands that we are made clean,
And it’s in His death that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

Call to Worship from St. Benedict

O gracious and holy Father,
give us wisdom to perceive you,
diligence to seek you,
patience to wait for you,
eyes to behold you,
a heart to meditate upon you,
and a life to proclaim you,
through the power of the spirit
of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Apostle’s Creed

Hillsong has written a modern version of the Apostle’s Creed set to music. We thought this might be a good way for the children (and adults) in our community to learn the important theological truths that unite us together as followers of Jesus.

This I Believe” by Hillsong

Our Father everlasting
The all creating One
God Almighty

Through Your Holy Spirit
Conceiving Christ the Son
Jesus our Savior

I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the Name of Jesus

Our Judge and our Defender
Suffered and crucified
Forgiveness is in You

Descended into darkness
You rose in glorious life
Forever seated high

I believe in You
I believe You rose again
I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord

I believe in life eternal
I believe in the virgin birth
I believe in the saints’ communion
And in Your holy Church
I believe in the resurrection
When Jesus comes again
For I believe in the Name of Jesus

Offering Prayer – written by Walter DuPre

Heavenly Father,

We are living in a time of tremendous uncertainty.  We are anxious and fearful about the health of our families and friends.  We worry about the stress on our healthcare system, how it affects others and how it might affect us.  We see and read about the devastating economic effects of social distancing on businesses large and small.  We worry about our personal financial situations.  Lord, when we are afraid, often our first response is to hold tight to whatever we have, our family, our friends, our money.  We know that we should put our trust in you, but that seems so much harder now.  Lord, we pray that you will grant us a deep conviction that you are still sovereign over us – over disease and death, over economies and markets.  And in that trust, loosen our grip. Help us to look at this world with eyes of love and compassion.  Help us to share what we possess for the benefit of others, for the support of our communities, for the building of your kingdom here on earth. Amen.

Scripture Reading – Psalm 130
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2     Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
    to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
    so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
    and in his word I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
    more than watchmen wait for the morning,
    more than watchmen wait for the morning.

7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
    for with the Lord is unfailing love
    and with him is full redemption.
8 He himself will redeem Israel
    from all their sins.

Community Prayer
This week reach out to at least one person and ask them how you can be praying for them and share with them how they can be praying for you.

Prayer Requests
Prayer remains a tangible way we can engage the needs of our community and the world.  If you have a prayer request or praise that you would like our Kairos prayer leaders to lift up on your behalf in prayer, please email your prayer requests to Miriam at miriam@kairosatlanta.org.

Benediction
May the God of Grace and Glory
be with you as you follow this Lenten path.
Wherever it takes you,
and to whomever it takes you,
may you have the blessing of God the Father,
God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit,
both now and forever.  Amen.
